The latest NHS scandal comes as a result of dismissal of a report warning the authorities that problems existed which put patients at risk. Kay Sheldon was the inspector for the QCC which is a non-governmental body which is supposed to take the necessary actions to ensure patient safety within the NHS and private hospital systems. She was treated very unfairly and has spoken out about the extent of her ordeal. She did follow every step in every procedure outlined to the top and when she was continually ignored she went to the Daily Telegraph. I read the reports on this and other issues in the Daily Telegraph and recommend that you also read up on how cover-ups such as this go on. It might seem remote and unlikely to effect you as an individual but you just never know when one of your own loved ones will be caught in a system that is run by people whose salaries are hugely exorbitant and will seem to go to any length to cover up when they are paid to do the exact opposite.http://www.itv.com/news/granada/topic/morecambe-bay-nhs-trust/?page=3
I have posted the above articles because there is a breakdown in the health care system. It's not that nurses or other health professionals don't care about providing expert and excellent care. They are overworked in many instances and don't have the staffing levels to adequately care for the complexity of patient care. Studies have demonstrated that a 5:1 nurse to patient ratio cuts down on patient errors and injury. This ratio is appropriate for general med/surg. In more acute settings the level of care should be 1:1. When you pay health care workers less than they are worth the message is that they are not valued.
Mr. Osborne the Minister of Health has announced freeze on salary increases or what amounts to as such giving only a 1% raise to nurses. I think the wise Minister should be the first one to try this pay increase out first.
Salaries are always a large part of the pie because nurses work 24/7 unlike other employees in a hospital, even most doctors do not have to cover shifts unless they are a resident.
I hope that inspectors and nurses will continue to demand better treatment and fairer treatment when they find themselves caught in between a rock and a hard place. Maybe nurses thought they were trying to manage and could not recognize that they were overloaded and needed some management interventions. Now they will face investigations and possible disciplinary actions up to and including license revocation and if this situations follows the Mid Staffordshire outcome, police investigations.
Nurses who have disciplinary problems should contact their MP and reveal all they know about the situation specifically and in general what conditions they were working under. Always make sure you have a solid lawyer who is an expert in license law. Don't feel that you are drowning alone. Others have gone through the experience and it is my hope that nurses will support each other through the process http://www.stockfreeimages.com/p1/nurse.html.
