If you look at the specialty areas for the RN salary in the US the rates are higher than the average wage would be for working in a long term care facility for instance.
Nurses are often worked short-staffed and have to face mandatory overtime when bad weather hits and they cannot get replacement staff to cover the next shift. We have all been in this situation as we work in hospitals where nurses have to be on duty 24/7. Sung-Heui Bae, PhD, MPH, RN wrote an article in the Nurse Econ. which was published www.medscape.com entitled 'Presence of Nurse Mandatory Overtime Regulations and Nurse Patient Outcomes.' The study found that the risk of making medical errors was three times higher when RN's worked shifts lasting 12.5 hours or more.'
As more than 90% of US nurses are women (US Dept of Health and Human Services, 2010,) it is troubling that those who are mothers and have responsibilities for raising their children are put under so much pressure that can result in an investigation and loss of license. Many people are affected when an RN is unable to work due to an investigation and disciplinary process.
In the UK www.nursingtimes.net report states that there is a shortage of 2,300 midwives to meet current number of births. Margaret Hodge MP said 'NHS England is struggling to tell my committee who is accountable for ensuring something as fundamental as whether the NHS has enough midwives.'
I think nurses should be honored and looked after in a much more respectful manner than I read about and I hope as more nurses stand behind those who are under investigation and on through the process all the way through suspension/revocation we will see a change.
